THE ORIGIN STORY
Sofa Time began as TVSofa, an iPhone and iPad app created in Spain in 2014 to make an increasingly fragmented television and movie landscape easier to navigate. The original app combined discovery, detailed title pages, episode tracking, ratings, community opinions and notifications. It also connected to Series.ly and could surface third-party viewing links, a useful but legally uncertain feature of that era.

When Spain changed its intellectual-property law in late 2014 and Series.ly removed links it could not guarantee were authorized, Javier voluntarily withdrew TVSofa from the App Store. He then rebuilt the idea around a more durable promise: help people organize, remember and understand what they watch without hosting or directing them to unauthorized playback. TVSofa 2 arrived in 2015 with information, cast, reviews and viewing progress at its center.

The current codebase began in November 2019 and reached the App Store in January 2020. By then, legal streaming had become abundant but fragmented. The rebuilt app combined tracking with country-aware streaming-provider information. As the product expanded from television into movies, personal history, discovery, statistics, widgets and multiple sync services, TVSofa became Sofa Time.

In 2026, Sofa Time expanded from its Apple-platform roots with a native Android client. The same year, richer community and migration features helped people preserve years of viewing data as users of other tracking services searched for a new home.

PREVIOUS APPS AND WHAT THEY CONTRIBUTED
- TVSofa 2 (2015): Proved that catalog management, progress, reviews and metadata could stand on their own without playback links.
- Video Web: Described as a companion to TVSofa, it explored browser-based video detection and playback across Apple TV and Chromecast.
- Trailers Now (2018): Focused on theatrical discovery, trailers, favorites and release alerts—ideas now incorporated into Sofa Time's broader discovery system.

THE MOTIVATION
The durable idea behind Sofa Time is that a watch history is a form of personal memory. Catalog data can be queried again; the layer a person adds cannot. Viewing dates, ratings, rewatches, lists, notes, comments and the exact place where a series paused may represent years of a person's life. Sofa Time is built to keep that record useful, portable and under the user's control while reducing the chaos created by fragmented streaming services.

CHART AND GROWTH MILESTONES
- Developer-provided historical App Store data shows that TVSofa reached No. 1 in the overall free-app ranking in markets including Spain.
- Sofa Time later held leading positions in free-app rankings for several days in multiple countries, generating thousands of downloads in short periods.
- In August 2026, Javier reported that the Sofa Time community was approaching 250,000 registered users across iOS and Android.

These chart, download and registration figures are developer-provided. They should be attributed accordingly when precise sourcing matters.

ABOUT JAVIER AZNAR
Javier Aznar is the Spanish independent developer behind Sofa Time and The Clash Soft. He has been building consumer apps around entertainment, video and discovery since at least 2014. His released work includes TVSofa, Video Web and Trailers Now. Today he leads Sofa Time across iOS and Android, combining long-term product ownership with a direct relationship to the app's community through release notes, support conversations and public product updates.

The motivation visible across his work is practical: reduce the chaos of fragmented entertainment, give people ownership over their viewing record and build closely enough with the community that user feedback can still change the roadmap.

SUGGESTED STORY ANGLES
1. A watch tracker as digital memory: why portability matters when a history spans a decade.
2. Independent software with continuity: one developer evolving the same core idea since 2014.
3. A legal pivot that strengthened the product: withdrawing playback links and rebuilding around organization and memory.
4. From Apple-only roots to native Android: translating product intent instead of wrapping a website.
5. Designing migrations for real people: retaining dates, ratings, reactions and other context rather than only watched/unwatched status.
6. A one-time Premium model in a subscription-heavy app economy.
